Surya Bhedana Pranayama (Right Nostril Breathing) – How to do, its Benefits and Precautions



In Sanskrit Surya means Sun, bhedana means relieving. It is also called as Right Nostril Breathing. In Sanskrit Prana means life force and ayama means extension. Pranayama is conscious awareness of breath (life force) that energizes and relaxes the body.
Pranayama or controlled breathing enables both the rhythm of performing yoga poses and relaxing mind for meditation.
By practicing Surya Bhedana Pranayam, we activate pingala nadi energy which control physical work and animation of the body.

 How to do Surya Bhedana Pranayama

·         Inhale through right nostril keeping the left one closed with your middle and little finger.
·         Close your right nostril with thumb and exhale through left nostril. This completes one round of Surya Bhedana Pranayama. We can do this pranayama by sitting straight in cross legged position. If you are uncomfortable to sit on floor, you can do it on a chair.
·         Surya Bhedana Pranayama can be practiced one to 3 minutes daily.

Benefits of Surya Bhedana Pranayam (Right Nostril Breathing)

1.       It activates body and bodily functions. Also, it increases digestive fire.
2.       It destroys diseases that are caused due to insufficiency of oxygen in blood.
3.       Surya Bhedana Pranayam cleans the frontal sinuses. It destroys disorders of vata and intestinal worms.
4.       It helps to get rid of dullness, lethargy and depression.
5.       It gives fresh energy to body. So, we can perform physical activities more efficiently.
6.       It is useful in treating low blood pressure and infertility in women.
7.       This pranayama increases body temperature which helps in remove Kafa (mucus) imbalance. It is very effective in obesity. Regular practice of right nostril breathing helps in weight loss.
8.       It is very effective for stress management.
9.       It helps in reducing anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses.

Precautions While Doing Surya Bhedana Pranayama (Right Nostirl Breathing)

1.       It should be practiced on an empty stomach.
2.       Inhalations should be done through right nostril and exhalations through the left.
3.       It can be done in the morning or evening or both. If you do not have time, then it can be done at own convenient time.
4.       It should be practiced after 4-5 hours of having food.
5.       Inhalation and exhalation should be in the ratio of 1:2. i.e exhalation should be double the count of inhalation.
6.       People who are suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure and epilepsy should not do this pranayama.
7.       People who have undergone brain surgeries, heart surgeries or abdominal surgeries should consult their medical expert before doing this Pranayam.
8.       It increases the heat in our body, so it should not be done when suffering from fever.
