Carom Seeds are also known as Ajwain, Ajowan Caraway, Ajowan. Its scientific name is Trachyspermum ammi. Its leaves and seeds like fruit both are consumed by humans. Its smell is like anise and oregano. It is pungent and bitter in taste. Benefits and Uses of Ajwain or Carom Seeds are many in daily life. Let us see them.

Benefits of Ajwain or Carom Seeds

·         It is a great stiumant.
·         It is carminative.
·         It is antispasmodic.
·         It is germicidal.
·         It is antiseptic.
·         It is digestive.
·         It is anti-flatulent.
·         It is heart stimulant.
·         It is diuretic.
·         It is anti-pyritic.
·         It is expectorant and an extraordinary tonic.

Uses of Ajwain or Carmon Seeds

Cold and Cough

·         Take 6gms of carom seeds, put them in a small cloth. Rub the palm with this cloth and smell the cloth repeatedly. This remedy cures cold.
·         Chew some Carom seeds and drink hot water. Doing so will cure cough.
·         Put ½ tsp. of Carom Seeds in water. Add little salt to it. Drink this water. It will relieve constant cough.
·         Chewing betel leaf or paan with Carom Seeds at night before sleeping controls and cures dry coughing.

Influenza

·         Boil water with 3gms. of Carom Seeds and Cinnamon. Drink this mixture thrice a day for 3 to 4 days. It cures influenza.

Flatulence, Indigestion, Low Appetite

Carom Seeds or Ajwain are antispasmodic. Its regular use is recommended for people suffering from Indigestion, Low Appetite, Flatulence.
·         Take ½ tsp. of Ajwain mixed with water in morning and evening.
·         Swallow 3 gms of ground Carom Seeds with ¾ gm. of kaala namak or black salt twice a day.
·         Make a Choorna or Powder by taking equal quantity of Carom Seeds, Black Pepper, Saunth (Dried Ginger). Take ½ tsp. of this choorna in morning and evening with water.
·         Take Ajwain seeds soaked in lime juice after meals for digestion.

Diarrhoea and Stomach-ache

·         Take Ajwain and salt in the ratio of 2:1 with hot water. It cures stomach ache, improves digestion and controls diarrhoea.
·         Make a powder with 15 gms of Ajwain, 5 gms. kala namak (black salt) and ½ gm heeng (asafetida or asafoetida). Consume 1gm. of powder with drinkable hot water twice a day.

Bronchitis and Asthma

·         Taking 1 tsp. Carom Seeds with hot water in morning and evening lessens sputum.

Ear Ache

·         Putting one or two drops of Ajwain oil in ear relieves ear ache.

Heart-Ache

·         Taking 1 tsp. of Ajwain with hot water stimulates the heart and relieves heart ache.

Throat Ache

·         Make a decoction by boiling 1 tsp. of ground Carom Seeds and little salt in water. Do gargles with this water when it is lukewarm. Do this twice or thrice to cure coarseness and pain in throat.

Rheumatic Pains, Arthritis

·         Poultice of crushed Carom seeds applied to painful rheumatic joint relieves pain.
·         Massaging of affected area with Ajwain oil relieves pain.

Foul Ulcers, Ringworm, Itching

·         Taking Ajwain Flower (in little quantity) helps killing germs.
·         Cleaning the affected part with Ajwain water kills germs.
·         Applying paste of ground Ajwain with hot water helps in curing ring worm, itching and removes offensive smell from foul ulcers.

Stomach Worms

·         Taking 3 to 7 drops of Ajwain oil for few days destroys worms in stomach.
·         Taking Ajwain choorna with buttermilk is also useful.
·         Boil 25 gms ground Ajwain soaked overnight in 500 ml. water till 125 ml. water remains. Taking this decoction as 1 dose twice a day for 2-3 days destroys worms. The same is to be divided and given in 2 doses to children.

Bile

·         Taking 2 gms. of Ajwain with 3 gm. of jaggery and water cures biles.

Menstrual Disorders and Post-natal Cure

·         6 gms. choorna of Ajwain with hot milk regulates menstrual flow of blood.
·         Taking ground Ajwain with jaggery after delivery for few days relieves backache, cleans the uterus, stimulates digestion, increases appetite and gives strength.

Leucorrhoea

·         Take 25 gms. of Carom Seeds and 125 ml. of water. Soak it overnight in earthern pot. Ground these seeds with water. Take this paste in the morning for some time. It controls leucorrhoea.

Pimples

·         Apply paste of 30 gms of ground Ajwain mixed with curd on face at night. Wash the face in the morning with warm water. It cures pimples and brings glow to the face.

Stones

·         Taking 3-4 gms. of Ajwain daily for some time with water helps in breaking the stones and its explusion from kidney or urinary bladder.

Wind

·         Taking 1 tsp. Ground Ajwain with ¼ tsp. kaala namak in skimmed curd relieves wind.

As Deodorant

·         Ajwain is very effective in killing germs, insects and purifies the air.
·         Tie carom seeds in a cloth. Keeping this cloth in the cupboard infested with cockroaches etc helps in removing them.

Weight Loss, Vomiting, Constipation, Nausea

How to prepare Ajwain Choorna

·         Take 100 gms Carom Seeds, 2 lemons, 5-7 black pepper and 1 tsp. black salt.
·         Roast Carom seeds in a pan for 2-3 minutes.
·         Take out the juice of 2 lemons in a bowl. Add Carom Seeds to lemon juice. Mix it well and keep it for half an hour, so that lemon juice gets absorbed well by the Carom Seeds. Now add 1 tsp of black salt to this mix.
·         Put it in a plate. Spread it properly so it gets proper sunlight. Keep in sunlight for 10-12 hours.
·          Now put these Carom seeds in a grinder along with 5-7 black pepper and grind it. Ajwain Choorna is now ready.
This choorna helps in curing vomiting, nausea, constipation and assists in weight loss. For weight loss have it in morning along with drinkable hot water. For vomiting or Nausea take 1/2 tsp. of this choorna along with water.

Apart from its inherent curative properties Ajwain is cheap and easily available in every kitchen. Its regular consumption is very beneficial and does not result in any mental or physical side affects.
