Apan Vayu Mudra for Heart Problems |
Apan Vayu Mudra is hand gesture which helps in promoting a healthy heart. It balances body elements.
Human body is made of five elements Fire, Air, Water, Space and Earth. These five elements are denoted by five fingers of our hands.
Thumb represents Fire element, index finger represents Air element, middle finger represents space element, ring finger represents earth element and little finger represents water element.
When these five elements remain in balance it creates health, harmony and vitality. Imbalance of these five elements would cause disease and sickness.
Hand mudra is formed with one or more fingers coming in contact with the thumb to complete the electric circuit and facilitate the flow of life energy throughout the body. This results in balancing of body elements represented by these fingers.
Apana Vayu Mudra is also known as Mrita-Sanjeevani Mudra because Yoga experts believe that this mudra can reduce the risk of life during a heart attack or angina pectoris (chest pain).
How to do Apana Vayu Mudra
- Bend the index finger such that its tip touches the base of the thumb. Bring the tips of middle finger and ring finger in contact with tip of the thumb. Little finger should remain straight. It should be practiced with both hands simultaneously.
Duration of Apana Vayu Mudra
Start with 15 minutes a day and increase it up to 30 to 45 minutes a day. For best results this mudra should be done in the sitting position with spine straight. Breathe normally. It can be done at a stretch or 3 sittings of 15 minute each.
Before starting the mudra session rub the hands against each other few times to stimulate the flow of energy through the fingers. This would enhance the healing effect.
Benefits of Apan Vayu Mudra
Reduces the air element
Excess air element in the body hampers blood flow. In the long run it would deteriorate the heart muscles as well. Apan Vayu Mudra can handle this by reducing air element.
Increases the fire element
This mudra increases heat and stimulates the circulatory system for better blood flow. The increased heat would accelerate the process of blood purification.
Increases the space element
This mudra Increases the space element. This would infuse more oxygen into the body to make blood oxygen rich. It makes breathing easy and relieves the heart problems.
It increases the earth element to make our heart muscles strong.

- Apan vayu mudra can be used to lessen the general pain and aches like headache, toothache, backache, neck pain, joint pain and arthritis.
- It improves lung functioning to relieve asthma and respiratory system related problems. It improves blood circulation and oxygenation of blood.
- It also balances the vata and pitta dosha in our body. Hence it is beneficial for all health issues related to vata or pitta imbalance.
Precautionary measures
- Do not tighten body or press the fingers with too much pressure while performing hand mudra. It would obstruct free flow of energy and desired results would not come.
- It is not to be considered as full-fledged treatment for heart problems. If you are under medication, then do not stop taking them. Practice this mudra along with medicine for better results.
- Pregnant women, breastfeeding ladies and people with chronic health issues should consult with a yoga expert before practicing this mudra.
- Optimum time limit for daily practice is 15 to 45 mintues. Over practice of this yoga hand mudra may have some consequences.
