Prithvi means ‘vast one’ and is also name of earth in Sanskrit. Mudra signifies ‘gesture’ or ‘mark’ or ‘seal’. Prithvi Mudra increases the Prithvi or Earth element in the body. So it is also called as Prithvi Vardhak Mudra.
It also decreases the Agni or Fire element in the body. So it is also called as Agni Shaamak Mudra.

How to Prithvi Mudra

Prithvi Mudra is formed by joining tips of ring finger and tip of thumb. Other fingers are kept straight as much possible but not rigid.
It should be practiced with both hands.
It is recommended to do this mudra sitting quietly while meditating. Look at breath come in and go out of your body. It is suggested not to move hands and fingers while practicing this mudra.

  • Prithvi Mudra increases vitality, strength and endurance. It strengthens and heals the physical body.
  • Practice of Prithi Mudra increases Kapha humor within the body. So, it can be used to overcome disorders caused by kapha deficienty. People with kapha excess should practice it in moderation.
  • Practice of Prithvi Mudra can help to reduce overactive Agni element and disorders caused by excess fire element like emaciation, fever, inflammation etc.
  • People with pronounced Pitta constitution can practice Prithvi Mudra regularaly to avoid illness.

  • Prithvi Mudra should be done 30 to 45 minutes every day either at one stretch or in 3 parts of 10-15 minutes each. People with kapha deficiency can do it for longer periods also. It can be performed at anytime of the day.

Precaution

People with a pronounced kapha constitution should do this mudra in moderation only.
