Shankh Mudra for Thyroid, Stammering, Restlessness

Shankh means conch in India. In this Hand Mudra, we have to use both the hands to form a conch shape. So, it is called as Shankh Mudra or Seashell Mudra. Mudra means Gesture or Seal.

As per Yoga, Thumb represents fire element. Index finger represents Air element. Middle finger represents Sky element. Ring finger represents earth element. Little finger represents water element.

How to do Shankh Mudra

·         Sit cross legged on a Yoga Mat. Keep your spine erect but relaxed. If you cannot sit on floor, sit on chair or bed. It can be done in Vajrasana, Padmasana or Sukhasana.
·         Raise your arms. Bend your elbows. Place your hands in front of chest.
·         Put your left thumb in middle of palm of right hand.
·         Encircle left thumb with all four fingers of right hand.
·         Raise your right thumb.
·         Turn your left hand thumb. Touch the tip of middle finger of left hand with tip of right hand thumb.
·         Left hand fingers should remain fairly straight touching each other as if resting on right hand fingers.
·         Now Shankh Mudra is ready, so keep your hands in this position touching chest area.

 

Duration of doing Shankh Mudra

·         Hand Mudras can be done for up to 45 minutes daily at a stretch or in intervals. Shankh Mudra can be done everyday in morning for continuously 45 minutes while meditating or just sitting. If you cannot sit at a stretch, it can be done 15 minutes three times a day.

·         It drives away allergic disorders, especially skin rashes.
·         It helps in reducing nervousness & anxiety.
·         Regular practice of Shankh Mudra helps in improving thyroid disorders.
·         It affects the throat chakra. Thus, toning vocal cords, clearing airways, strengthening lungs. It calms any agitation. It reduces stress.

Precautions

·         People with Vatta and Kapha dominant humor should do this mudra in moderation as it increases both these elements in the body.
